Lions' D.J. Wonnum Named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week After Two-Finger Block of 35-Yard Field Goal Beats Packers

DETROIT, Wayne County, Michigan — Detroit Lions defensive end D.J. Wonnum was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on October 28 for his game-turning blocked field goal in the Lions' win over the Green Bay Packers.
Late in the tied game, after the Lions turned the ball over on downs at their own 24-yard line, the Packers lined up for a go-ahead kick, and Wonnum got two fingers on Trey Smack's 35-yard attempt, which missed. The Lions then drove 10 plays, and Jake Bates kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired. Several Lions players said afterward they had not even realized Wonnum touched the ball, and quarterback Jared Goff also marveled at the play.
Wonnum has 5 sacks this season, tied for the team lead, and is the second Lion to earn a weekly award this season. The Lions are 4-2 and host the Minnesota Vikings this weekend.
