Degreaser Mistaken for Sugar in Margaritas at a Forest City, North Carolina, Chili's: Three Customers Suffer Chemical Burns to the Mouth; License Briefly Suspended

A bartending mix-up at a Chili's restaurant in Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina, during lunch preparation on October 28 left three customers with chemical burns to their mouths after an employee mistook granular degreaser for sugar while mixing margaritas. The incident came to light on October 30 through local media. The three customers felt immediate discomfort after drinking, and the health district confirmed chemical burns in and around their mouths.
According to the Foothills Health District, the chemicals had been brought into the store two days earlier by a worker from a contractor pressure-washing the building's exterior and were stored in an unlabeled container in the bar area, where another employee used them during preparation. The health district investigated, immediately suspended the restaurant's food service permit, and required the affected food and drink to be discarded.
