Navajo Nation Council to Vote Oct. 30 on $20 Million Flood Relief Fund; San Juan River Flooding Damaged About 500 Homes Near Shiprock

The Navajo Nation Council was set to vote on October 30 on creating an emergency response fund with a $20 million supplemental appropriation to respond to San Juan River flooding around Shiprock, in San Juan County, New Mexico. When the river rose on October 23, Shiprock Chapter Vice President Deborah Yazzie and others urged riverside residents to evacuate; about 200 people were evacuated and 15 were staying in shelters, according to Sharon Sandoval, chief of staff to Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, who spoke on October 26. Roughly 500 homes were damaged and more than 1,000 people affected.

The flooding also struck wastewater infrastructure: Bloomfield's treatment plant was inundated and temporarily shut down, sending untreated sewage into the San Juan River, and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority reported on October 25 that the Shiprock wastewater plant's normal treatment was interrupted. Unidentified barrels were also seen floating on the river.
