UNMC Names Gary Peters Its 2026 Community Service to Research Award Recipient for Pediatric Cancer Advocacy

OMAHA, Douglas County, Nebraska — The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) announced on October 28 that Gary Peters is the recipient of its 2026 Community Service to Research Award, honoring more than a decade of advocacy for pediatric cancer research.
Peters' commitment traces back to the loss of his son, Jacob, to pediatric cancer, and he has carried on the fight in Jacob's honor. His nomination letter noted that Nebraska is one of only seven states with legislative funding dedicated specifically to pediatric cancer research, and that the state currently contributes $4.5 million annually — funding university leaders credit Peters as a driving force behind securing and sustaining.
Anderson-Berry of the Child Health Research Institute, who has known the Peters family for seven years, praised his willingness to show up "at a moment's notice" for any audience that could make a difference. Peters will be recognized alongside UNMC's New Investigator, Distinguished Scientist and Scientist Laureate recipients at the October ceremony, with Drs. Coulter and Anderson-Berry presenting his award.
