MOONACHIE, Bergen County, New Jersey — A New Jersey State Police trooper shot and killed a man in Moonachie at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, the state Attorney General's Office announced, and the office is handling the investigation.

The Attorney General's Office is not releasing the identity of the deceased or the name of the trooper involved at this time, and said the circumstances surrounding the encounter remain under investigation. A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General's Office to investigate a person's death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacity, and requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine whether the evidence supports an indictment. A State Police spokesperson referred questions to the Attorney General's Office.

West Commercial Avenue, in a commercial section of the borough just north of the Meadowlands, was closed off as of 6:30 p.m. Moonachie Police Chief Richard Behrens said borough officers were on the scene of an incident. Carlstadt Police Chief Thomas Cox told NorthJersey.com: "The incident all occurred in Moonachie."
