Hawaii's state Department of Health in Honolulu announced on October 27 that it is launching a statewide campaign during National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week to protect the state's youngest residents from environmental lead hazards. Under the slogan "Get the Facts, Get Your Child Tested, Get Your Home Checked," the department is airing public service announcements on television, digital media and social media, and has updated its website, lead.hawaii.gov, so families can find prevention resources, educational materials, community support services and direct help from department programs.

The PSAs star local comedian and content creator Xavier Cumings, known as "HowsDisGuy," who uses humorous characters in three Hawaii-themed spots to help families spot hidden lead hazards in fishing gear, everyday habits and older housing. The campaign also includes a free educational webinar led by internationally known lead researcher Dr. Bruce Lanphear.

Derek Priddy, coordinator of the department's Hawaii Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, said children are most vulnerable in their first years, when they begin crawling, touching everything and putting things in their mouths, and that this stage passes quickly; taking the simple steps now — get the facts, get your child tested, get your home checked — can help children succeed in school and beyond.

The Hawaii campaign runs in step with the national prevention week, October 25 to 31.
