Ground Broken on October 27 for $16.2 Million Renovation of Sangamon County Public Health Building in Springfield, Illinois; Completion Expected in Early 2028

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held on October 27 for the renovation of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health building in Springfield, Illinois, attended by county and state officials. The $16.2 million project is located at the existing facility on South Grand Avenue on Springfield's east side, and work is now under way.
Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter said the renovation will bring multiple key services under one roof, without raising taxes or adding debt. County Public Health Administrator John Ridley said the renovated facility will make it easier for residents to access services.
Under the plan, the building will house public health services, community resources, job services, Capital Township functions, veterans assistance and other programs, so residents can handle multiple matters in one place instead of traveling between scattered offices. The project is expected to be completed in early 2028, giving the county health department a more centralized service layout.
For residents who regularly use public health services, co-located offices mean shorter waits and clearer guidance. The county said arrangements for existing services during construction will be announced separately, and residents should watch for updates from the county public health department.
