Sacramento, Sacramento County, California: Over 1,000 Residents Petition for Community Benefits From Downtown Railyards Project; Council Vote Set for October 27 Delayed

A dispute over community benefits from the downtown Railyards development project in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, has drawn a petition of more than 1,000 residents, according to a local union, and a City Council vote planned for October 27 has been delayed.

Dozens of residents rallied outside Old City Hall on October 21. Unite Here Local 49, whose president Aamir Deen voiced the demands, is seeking at least 25% affordable housing, a grocery store, an anti-displacement fund and living wages for operations workers at the proposed hotels and soccer stadium. Current plans call for about 6% affordable homes.

Councilwoman Mai Vang said she supports the Railyards project but wants “a railyard for all” and backed the delay. The project is expected to double the size of downtown, with up to 10,000 housing units, a concert venue, a stadium and three hotels. Nancy Williams, 68, who lives in affordable housing within the project area and pays rent with her Social Security check, fears being priced out. Developer LDK Ventures did not respond to a request for comment. The delayed October 27 vote concerned an enhanced infrastructure financing district for the project.
