Two Missing Colorado Mountain College Students, 19 and 20, Found Dead in West Apostle Basin After Ice Mountain Hike

The Chaffee County Sheriff's Office confirmed on October 29 that the bodies of two missing Colorado Mountain College Leadville students were found on the afternoon of October 28 in a basin of West Apostle Mountain, near each other, Fox Weather reported on October 29. Kaden Matsuda, 19, and Jackson Donlon, 20, left campus on Friday, October 23, to climb Ice Mountain, a peak of nearly 14,000 feet in Chaffee County. They had told friends they would return to campus by Sunday, but when they did not, college staff reported them missing to the sheriff's office on October 26.
During the search, a snowstorm hit the mountains, dropping one to two feet of snow around Ice Mountain, with drifts up to four feet deep in places. Searchers found Matsuda's vehicle at the Mount Huron trailhead, and a helicopter later spotted a tent collapsed under the snow, containing sleeping bags, a stove and clothing.
The sheriff's office said the two were found near each other in the basin and that no foul play is suspected. Matsuda was from Ridgway, Colorado; Donlon was from New York State.
