Follow-Up: Cyclone Arnab Kills 3 in India and Destroys at Least 180 Houses, Andhra Pradesh Hardest Hit

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · World · GSM News

Cyclone Arnab made landfall in India's Andhra Pradesh state early on Wednesday, and the toll emerged through the day: authorities said the storm had killed three people, destroyed at least 180 houses and brought down 220 trees, disrupting power supplies across several areas. GSM's landfall follow-up earlier on Wednesday reported no deaths at that stage; the casualty and damage figures are new developments since landfall was completed.

According to Reuters, Narendra Singh Bundela, a senior official at India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), told reporters: 'Andhra Pradesh has been most affected … three people have lost their lives.' In a letter to federal Home Minister Amit Shah, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said heavy rain and high winds had destroyed at least 180 houses, brought down 220 trees and disrupted power in several areas. The Associated Press reported that two women were electrocuted in separate incidents in the port city of Visakhapatnam, while another person was killed when a tree fell in East Godavari district.

The fertile Konaseema district was the worst hit so far: banana and coconut plantations were extensively damaged, and large numbers of trees and electricity poles were uprooted — about 6,000 poles in Konaseema alone — blocking roads as disaster workers rushed to clear debris and restore power. Ahead of the cyclone's arrival, more than 180,000 people had been evacuated across Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha, some schools were closed, and some train and flight services along the eastern coast were cancelled.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the landfall process was complete and Arnab had weakened to a severe cyclonic storm, expected to weaken further as it moves inland, though heavy rainfall would continue in coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of southern Odisha. Odisha was not as badly affected, and NDRF and state disaster teams remained at work in the affected areas.
