DHS Slams New York Sanctuary Policies After Release of Man Arrested for Assaulting a Police Officer

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

Washington — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on October 28 condemned New York's sanctuary policies, saying Alpha Bah, a national of Guinea who was arrested at Queens Central Booking for aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and intent to obtain transportation without paying, was released by the NYPD without notifying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite a detainer ICE lodged on October 7. Bah remains at large.

According to DHS, Bah had previously been arrested by the NYPD on June 15, 2026, for transportation without paying — a Manhattan detainer was likewise not honored — and on January 5, 2025, for criminal trespass. He entered the United States via Arizona in November 2023, was arrested by Border Patrol and released.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin called on Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani to end sanctuary policies. DHS also released ICE figures for January 20, 2025 through October 8, 2026: 16,070 detainers were not honored in New York, and the individuals concerned accounted for 52,503 criminal charges and convictions in total, including 131 homicides, 132 kidnappings, 1,017 sexual offenses, 1,561 DUIs, 1,631 burglaries, 1,776 robberies, 2,198 weapons offenses, 4,324 dangerous-drug offenses and 9,502 assaults.
