Nebraska Governor Pillen Creates Nation's First Military Spouse Service Ribbon, Honors Four Army Spouses

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced on October 28 in Lincoln the creation of the Governor's Military Spouse Service Ribbon, honoring the sacrifices of military spouses, and proclaimed October as Nebraska Military and Veteran Spouse Recognition Month. The first ribbons were presented to four Army spouses: Laurie Scheer, Amy Kirchhoff, Shawna Smith and Rebekka Edwards.
"Behind every servicemember is a strong family at home that carries the weight of his or her service. Military spouses selflessly support our servicemembers with loyalty, love and sacrifice," Pillen said.
According to figures released by the Governor's Office, Army spouses earn an average of $36,101 a year and face an unemployment rate of 20%. Only about 51% of states offer tuition support for military spouses and only about 38% offer occupational license reciprocity. Nebraska's new ribbon is the first of its kind in the nation.
John Hilgert, director of the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs, said the ribbon is one way to thank military spouses and let them know their sacrifices are seen and valued. Eligible spouses can learn how to apply through the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs.
