Louisiana Judge Signs Injunction Making LSU Guard R.J. Luis Temporarily Eligible; Hearing Set Nov. 13

BATON ROUGE, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana — A Baton Rouge judge signed an injunction on Oct. 28 that makes LSU guard RJ Luis temporarily eligible for the 2026-27 season, attorney Tony Clayton, one of Luis' lawyers, told NOLA.com. A preliminary injunction hearing on Nov. 13 will determine whether he remains eligible.
The injunction enjoins the SEC from imposing penalties on LSU for rostering Luis. Before the Nov. 13 hearing, LSU has three games scheduled that the injunction would allow Luis to play in, starting with the Nov. 3 season opener against LSU New Orleans. LSU did not immediately respond to requests for comment on whether head coach Will Wade intends to play him.
Luis, 23, was the 2025 Big East Player of the Year at St. John's, leading the Red Storm to the conference regular-season and tournament titles and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament while averaging 18.2 points per game. He declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, went undrafted, and signed a two-way contract with the Utah Jazz and later an Exhibit 10 deal with the Boston Celtics before committing to LSU in May. The NCAA and SEC had ruled him ineligible because he signed professional contracts without following NCAA protocols for retaining eligibility.
