Michigan: Travis Baker, 35, Died in Oct. 26 Leroy Township Standoff as Home Burned; Cause of Death Under Investigation

LEROY TOWNSHIP, Calhoun County, Michigan — Calhoun County Sheriff Steven Hinkley and Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley held a press conference on Oct. 28 on the Oct. 26 standoff in Leroy Township, in which Travis Baker, 35, died after an exchange of gunfire and a house fire. Baker's cause of death is part of an investigation being handled by the Michigan State Police, they said.
Deputies went to a residence on Running Deer Ridge at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, to execute a search warrant and a probation violation warrant, the sheriff's office said. The incident stemmed from a domestic situation the previous day involving Baker and his parents, and concerns about Baker's behavior and possession of firearms. The sheriff's Special Response Team deployed a drone; shots were fired from inside the home, striking specialized vehicles of both the sheriff's office and Battle Creek police, and two sheriff's office drones were shot down. An emergency alert advised nearby residents to shelter in place or evacuate.
A Battle Creek police officer, now on administrative leave per policy, returned fire from an armored vehicle, Bagley said; shortly after, a fire started and rapidly engulfed the home. Officials said they believe Baker used an accelerant to start the fire. "It's not the outcome we would have wanted," Bagley said. "But sadly, here we are." The officer-involved shooting and the fire remain under investigation.
