Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Federal Disaster Tax Relief for Texans Impacted by July Storms

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · States · GSM News

Gov. Greg Abbott announced on October 28 that the Internal Revenue Service has granted his request for federal disaster tax relief for individuals and businesses in 62 Texas counties impacted by the severe storms and flooding in July, postponing certain federal tax filing and payment deadlines through February 1, 2027.

Abbott made the request in an October 15 letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, following the state disaster proclamation he issued on July 14 for the July storms and floods. The relief gives affected taxpayers in the 62 counties more time to file returns and pay federal taxes while they rebuild.

"Texans who took damage from the July storms and floods now have more time to file and pay federal taxes," Abbott said. "I thank Secretary Bessent and the IRS for approving this request and helping Texas communities continue to recover."

The Governor's Office urged affected Texans to check the IRS list of covered counties to confirm their eligibility and to complete the postponed filings and payments by the new February 1, 2027, deadline.
