Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on October 27 that New York State will provide $3.3 million to support three community projects in Queens, New York City, covering workforce training, food distribution and safety upgrades, with the funding administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).

The largest share, $1.5 million, will fund a new Electrical Trade Laboratory and Vocational Training Program at the Springfield Gardens Educational Campus, where four co-located high schools will share new electrical and HVAC laboratories; the money covers renovations, equipment and safety upgrades, and students will be able to earn industry certifications. Campus Magnet High School on the campus will also benefit. Another $1 million will expand the food distribution center of the nonprofit RIVER FUND, which serves more than 40 zip codes, distributes more than one million pounds of groceries each month and serves over 35,000 households a year. The remaining $800,000 will pay for lighting and fencing upgrades around the Queens Supreme Court on Sutphin Boulevard.

Hochul said the investment opens doors to high-wage skilled trades for Queens students, expands food assistance for families who need it and makes the courthouse area safer. DASNY President and CEO Robert J. Rodriguez said the authority will move the funding into the three projects as quickly as possible.

State Senators Leroy Comrie and Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., Assembly Members David I. Weprin, Alicia L. Hyndman and Khaleel M. Anderson, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., and Council Members Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, Lynn Schulman and Deputy Speaker Dr. Nantasha Williams were among the elected officials who welcomed the funding.
