Nebraska: Governor Pillen Requests Federal Disaster Declaration for Flood-Damaged Counties

Gov. Jim Pillen on October 27 requested a federal disaster declaration for eight Nebraska counties damaged by severe flooding from September 30 through October 6, 2026, with preliminary damage assessments already exceeding $23 million.
The Public Assistance request covers Douglas, Fillmore, Lancaster, Saline, Sarpy, Saunders, Seward and Thayer counties. The flooding damaged water control facilities, roads, bridges, electrical distribution systems, schools and public buildings and equipment, and left extensive debris in Lancaster, Thayer and Saunders counties. Omaha, in Douglas County, reported 80 water rescues during the flooding.
Pillen also separately requested a U.S. Small Business Administration disaster declaration for Douglas County, where at least 25 homes or businesses were damaged and uninsured losses reached at least 40 percent, meeting the threshold for SBA disaster loans.
Pillen said the state will work closely with federal and local partners to help the affected communities recover, and urged the federal government to approve the request quickly so repair funding can flow.
