Follow-Up: Orange County, California: Teamsters Strike by County Waste and Public Works Employees Resumes Thursday After Union Rejects Final Offer

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · California · GSM News

The labor dispute between Orange County, California, and the Teamsters escalated again this week: Teamsters Joint Council 42 rejected the county's latest contract offer on Monday night, and the strike by county waste and public-works employees will resume on Thursday, October 29. The two sides are also scheduled to hold a bargaining session the same day.

The strike had been paused so that waste haulers could keep using county landfills and garbage collection across the county would not break down. The Board of Supervisors previously reviewed the union's proposal in closed session and temporarily reopened the county's three landfills while picketing was suspended.

Board of Supervisors Chair Doug Chaffee said the county has made a "last, best and final" offer that exceeds cost-of-living adjustments and adds extra holidays. He also noted that any agreement would run only through the end of next August and would then have to be renegotiated.

The union has criticized the county's offer as falling short on wages and benefits. With the strike resuming, operations at county landfills and some public-works services may be affected, and the county asked residents to watch for changes to trash collection arrangements.

Thursday's bargaining session will help determine how long the walkout lasts. GSM will continue following the dispute.
