Pittsburgh's Wabash Tunnel to Close Permanently on December 1 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania: $43 Million Repair Bill and Only About 1,500 Vehicles a Day

Pittsburgh Regional Transit in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, announced that the Wabash Tunnel will close permanently starting December 1, after the agency's board voted to approve the closure. The agency said the tunnel's overall structure is sound, but its lighting, ventilation and electrical systems are in poor to critical condition and past their useful life, and keeping it open would require about $43 million in repairs.
Chief Executive Officer Katharine Kelleman said the tunnel now carries mainly private vehicles rather than public transit, with about 1,500 vehicles a day, and the agency no longer runs scheduled bus service through it, so limited resources should be concentrated on the infrastructure most critical to safe and reliable transit service.
The agency's assessment found that although the tunnel's structure remains in good condition, meeting current safety standards would require extensive upgrades to lighting, ventilation and electrical systems at high cost. It emphasized that after the closure, the resources will go to more critical transit infrastructure to keep daily passenger travel safe and reliable. The closure does not affect the Wabash park-and-ride lot, which will remain open for riders.
