Follow-Up: Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island to Start Building New Water Line in Early November on Crandall Road: $992,000 Contract First Serves Seven Homes with 'Nightmare' PFAS Levels

Construction of a new public water line for the Crandall Road neighborhood in Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island, will begin in early November to address severe PFAS contamination, the first phase of the town's response to the worst such contamination event in the state.
Town Administrator Patrick Jones said at an October 27 meeting that the town has awarded a $992,000 contract to Smithfield-based Boyle & Fogarty Construction to connect seven homes to public water; those homes' well contamination levels are so high they cannot be effectively treated with filtration systems.
The town said the seven homes are only part of the affected households, with many wells across the neighborhood still testing above the standard, and later phases will advance depending on testing results and funding. The state Department of Environmental Management stressed that testing continues, and residents can check with the town on the status of their wells. The contamination area borders Massachusetts, where the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has found seven homes in Westport and Fall River also above safety limits.
