Holtec Completes Core Repairs at Michigan's Palisades Nuclear Plant, Restart Reviews Advance; Would Be First U.S. Plant to Restart After Decommissioning Began

Holtec International has completed core equipment repairs at the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Van Buren County, Michigan, and the restart review is moving forward; if approved, Palisades would become the first U.S. nuclear plant to return to service after having entered decommissioning. The plant, shut down in 2022 and slated for dismantling, is being brought back with a $1.52 billion U.S. Department of Energy loan and a long-term power purchase agreement with Wolverine Power Cooperative.
Michigan's governor supports the restart as part of a clean-energy and jobs strategy, while critics cite safety risks and nearby drinking-water concerns. Restart would require NRC approval and local government cooperation.
