U.S. Rep. Summer Lee joined Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, Heinz Endowments CEO Chris DeCardy and community partners at the Carlow Early Learning Center in Pittsburgh on Oct. 29 to announce nearly $6 million in announced and proposed investment to expand affordable childcare and after-school programs for Allegheny County families.

The funding supports the county's Forward with Families initiative, launched in April 2026, which aims to add 5,000 childcare and after-school slots over five years, with the initial investment expected to support up to 1,000 new slots. The amounts announced include $3 million from the Heinz Endowments and $2.5 million proposed by County Executive Innamorato in the county's 2027 budget.

Rep. Lee said a single parent in Pennsylvania paying the median income price for infant care spends 40 percent of their income on it, before rent and food. She also said her office has advanced a $2 million federal Community Project Funding request into a committee-approved appropriations package to seek federal support for the initiative.
