Washington's Metropolitan Police Department announced on October 29 that a 66-year-old Northeast Washington man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with a homicide in early October. John Smith, 66, was taken into custody on October 28 by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force under a D.C. Superior Court warrant in the October 3 killing of Rodney Bennett, 65, also of Northeast Washington.

The investigation began at about 7:07 p.m. on October 3, when Sixth District officers responding to a report found an unconscious man inside an apartment in the 100 block of 45th Street NE; Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not disclosed the specific weapon allegedly used, the nature of the fatal injuries, or any relationship between the suspect and the victim. The homicide investigation remains active, and Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
