Honolulu, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi: Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor Floating Dock Replacement Announced Oct. 29; Work Starts Nov. 2, Boat Ramp Closed Through Year-End, Cost $493,000

The Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources announced in Honolulu on October 29 that replacement of the floating docks at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor will begin on Monday, November 2, and that the harbor's boat ramp will be closed for the duration of construction, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting. The department's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation said the project will replace the existing damaged, structurally compromised floating docks with new ADA-compliant models; the contractor is Sea Engineering, Inc., the total construction cost is just over $493,000, and the work will take about two months.
For the safety of boaters and workers, the Ala Wai boat ramp will remain closed throughout construction, and boaters can use the ramps at Maunalua Bay or Keʻehi Harbor instead. Located in urban Honolulu, the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor is a popular departure point for Oʻahu boaters; its aging dock facilities had become a safety concern, and the replacement is intended to restore normal use and improve accessible passage. The state said the schedule depends on weather, and boaters should plan their outings in advance during construction and avoid the closed ramp.
