Wilson County Early Voting Site Was Left Unlocked Overnight on October 21; Elections Director Said October 29 That No Equipment Was Tampered With

An early voting site in Wilson County, North Carolina, was found unlocked overnight on October 21; the incident was disclosed by media on October 29, and an incident report has been filed with the State Board of Elections. According to the Wilson Times, the Wilson County Agricultural Center was found unlocked that morning by a groundskeeper who arrived to open the facility.
Wilson County Elections Director Tasha Bell said officials inspected the site and found no evidence that anyone had entered or tampered with equipment. The board of elections discussed discipline for the chief judges responsible for locking up, but Bell decided to let them keep working through the end of the election.
A second incident was also reported: voting equipment that should have been returned to the elections office was left at the agricultural center overnight. The board of elections has authorized Bell to take steps to strengthen security management at the site. The incident occurred during early voting, less than a week before Election Day on November 3, when election security is especially sensitive; Bell emphasized that inspections found no sign that equipment had been tampered with and that the integrity of the vote was not affected.
