EOIR Reports Record Fiscal Year 2026: Immigration Courts Complete Nearly 974,000 Cases, Backlog Cut by Over 678,000

The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) of the U.S. Department of Justice announced in Falls Church, Virginia, on October 29 that during fiscal year 2026 the immigration courts completed nearly 974,000 cases, the highest total in the agency's history, while the Board of Immigration Appeals completed nearly 46,400 cases, its highest total in 20 years. EOIR, headquartered at 5107 Leesburg Pike in Falls Church, oversees immigration court proceedings and administrative appeals nationwide.
EOIR Acting Director Sirce Owen said the agency's immigration judges, appellate immigration judges, and legal and professional staff have worked to support the efforts of this Administration and to restore integrity, impartiality, and efficiency to the nation's immigration adjudications. She noted that since January 2025, EOIR has also reduced the backlog by over 678,000 cases.
On staffing, EOIR hired over 300 permanent immigration judges in fiscal year 2026, the highest single-year total in the agency's history, along with new temporary immigration judges. The new judges have joined an immigration judge corps committed to hearing cases fairly, expeditiously, and uniformly, in accordance with the law.
EOIR said it will continue to support the Administration's strong border security policies to keep the American people safe, and pointed to its Workload and Adjudication Statistics webpage for published datasets.
