Follow-Up: FDA Says E. coli Outbreak Linked to Chicken Wraps Has Ended; 50 Cases, Investigation Continues

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) updated its foodborne outbreak investigation table on October 28, announcing that the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to multi-ingredient wraps with chicken has ended and poses no ongoing risk to consumers. The outbreak, reference number 1421 (USDA 2026-04), totaled 50 cases; the FDA's outbreak investigation itself remains active.
The FDA said the wrap identified through the investigation is past shelf life and no longer available for purchase. The implicated wraps were proactively removed from the market before the link to the outbreak was established, and illnesses at the time occurred during one week in August. Because the products were removed from sale and are out of shelf life, the FDA said more detailed product information would not have provided consumers with an action they could take to prevent illness.
The outbreak was first listed on September 23 with 25 cases and rose to 50 by mid-October. As GSM reported on October 23, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed the products were Tarragon Chicken Salad Wraps sold at certain Trader Joe's stores; the chain had pulled the wraps in nine states after the FDA notified it of a possible issue in September.
The FDA table shows traceback, on-site inspection and sampling have all been initiated and the investigation status remains active, meaning work to pin down the source of contamination is not yet complete. Consumers who develop symptoms of foodborne illness should still contact their healthcare provider and public health officials.
