The Confucius Institute at University College Dublin (UCD) held a celebration on September 25 marking its 20th anniversary, attended by more than 200 guests, and used the occasion to officially launch a Primary School Chinese Language Education Programme that will extend Chinese-language teaching to more young people in Ireland.

Guests included UCD President Orla Feely and former Irish ambassadors to China Declan Kelleher and Paul Kavanagh. Ma Huaide, President of Renmin University of China, delivered a video address.

According to the Foreign Ministry website's report on October 8, Ambassador Zhao Xiyuan, who attended the celebration with his wife, said the 20th anniversary was an important milestone in the institute's development. Over the past 20 years, he said, the institute had made sustained efforts to advance international Chinese-language education, served as a bridge for dialogue among young people from China and Ireland, and contributed to people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

President Feely said education serves as a bridge connecting people's hearts and minds. She noted that the institute's sustained work in Chinese-language education and the teaching of Chinese culture had helped bring the people of China and Ireland closer together.

At the celebration, the institute officially launched its Primary School Chinese Language Education Programme, extending Chinese-language education and courses on Chinese culture to more young people in Ireland.
