Horror Game 'Mouthwashing' to Become a Film: Sony's Screen Gems Lands Rights, Kusama to Direct, Derrickson to Produce

Sony Pictures' Screen Gems has acquired the film rights to the psychological horror game 'Mouthwashing,' The Hollywood Reporter reported exclusively on October 29. Karyn Kusama will direct, with Scott Derrickson producing alongside C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng through Crooked Highway. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay are writing the screenplay.
Developed by Sweden's Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, 'Mouthwashing' launched on PC in 2024. The first-person game follows five crew members stranded aboard the space freighter Tulpar after it crash-lands on an asteroid, using surreal imagery and a nonlinear narrative to explore responsibility, denial and the consequences of unchecked power.
The game holds an 88 on Metacritic, won best narrative and players' choice at the Horror Game Awards, and has sold close to one million copies on PC. On October 29 it also arrived on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
No cast or release date has been announced for the film.
