State Department Imposes Visa Restrictions on Migrant Caravan Organizers: More Than 15 People Targeted in Past Week

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement on October 29 that the United States is deploying its visa restriction policy against individuals who organize, promote, support or facilitate migrant "caravans" of illegal immigration. According to the statement, investigations show that individuals in Central America and Mexico have been recruiting, coordinating and directing large groups of migrants traveling toward the U.S. southern border.
In the past week alone, the statement said, the United States has imposed visa restrictions on more than 15 people who organized, assisted or promoted recent caravans.
Those involved will face additional scrutiny when applying for U.S. visas, and their visas may be denied or revoked, the department said.
"Caravans" refers to large groups of migrants traveling on foot through Mexico toward the U.S. border. U.S. officials have repeatedly said such movements are recruited and driven by organizers and pose safety risks to participants.
