Report: Nebraska's Supplemental Poverty Rate of 7.5% Is the Nation's Second Lowest, Below Neighboring States at 8% to 10.8%

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · States · GSM News

A new report puts Nebraska's supplemental poverty rate at 7.5 percent, the second lowest among U.S. states. Neighboring states range from 8 percent to 10.8 percent on the same measure, all above Nebraska.

The Supplemental Poverty Measure, used by the U.S. Census Bureau, goes beyond cash income to include tax credits and noncash benefits such as nutrition and housing assistance, while subtracting taxes and necessary expenses, offering a fuller picture of residents' actual living conditions than the official poverty rate.

Nebraska has long been known for low unemployment and living costs, and the figure offers a fresh reference point for the state's household well-being.
