A key voting timeline was set on October 29 for the $2.2 billion Renaissance Center redevelopment plan in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan: the City Council's Planning and Economic Development Committee will vote on November 12 on whether to recommend approval of the project's $548 million incentives request and $133 million Community Benefits package. According to the Detroit Free Press, committee members announced the timeline at their October 29 meeting and public hearing, and developers Bedrock and General Motors hope to have all local approvals in hand before the council's December recess, with a final decision still to come from the Michigan Strategic Fund in Lansing. At the hearing, Teron Haynes Jr., a member of the Neighborhood Advisory Council that negotiated the Community Benefits package, said council members could not see the project's in-depth financial information because of a nondisclosure agreement between the development partners and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, and therefore could not negotiate fully; he cast the sole no vote on October 27 when the advisory council voted 8-1 to recommend approval of the Community Benefits deal. Committee Chair Latisha Johnson questioned economic growth corporation officials about the nondisclosure agreement at the meeting. The Renaissance Center redevelopment is one of the largest downtown Detroit projects, and the votes on the incentives and the Community Benefits package will decide the future of the landmark complex.
