The North Carolina State Auditor's Office released its first accounting on October 29 of Charlotte's $650 million stadium investment in Mecklenburg County. The city plans to contribute up to $650 million toward the Charlotte stadium renovation, a plan the City Council approved 7-3 in June 2024. According to the State Auditor's report, developer Tepper Sports & Entertainment committed $150 million under its agreement with the city and in July 2026 announced an additional $500 million investment. The city plans to repay the project debt with revenues from Mecklenburg County's hotel occupancy tax and prepared food and beverage tax, and the North Carolina Local Government Commission unanimously approved the city's financing request in April 2026; the renovations are expected to be completed by 2030. The agreement keeps the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC in Charlotte through 2040, with financial terms encouraging the teams to stay through early 2046. The stadium currently hosts about 50 ticketed events a year and roughly two million attendees annually; recent events include a Copa America semifinal, two sold-out Savannah Bananas nights, the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, and the Concert for Carolina, which raised $24.5 million for Hurricane Helene relief. The State Auditor's Office notes that this first report is an informational overview, not an audit conducted under government auditing standards, and that future reports will provide independently reviewed information on borrowing, expenditures and construction progress.
