The Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, adopted its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan on October 29, setting a roadmap for water-environment protection over the next five years. The plan redefines the district's vision as "to champion clean water and sustainable communities," and its mission as protecting Lake Michigan and public health, improving the water environment, and building flood resilience. The district said the plan was developed through more than a year of public input, surveys and a lengthy development and review process, with clear and feasible objectives tied to measurable results in protecting the water environment and serving communities. The plan covers Chicago and 128 surrounding communities across an 882-square-mile service area, with downstream waters also benefiting. Vice President and Strategic Plan Co-Chair Patricia Theresa Flynn said the plan represents a 21st-century commitment that will sharpen the district's ability to protect the water environment and positively impact those it serves, benefiting generations to come.
