Cochise County, Arizona: State's First New World Screwworm Case Confirmed Oct. 29: Maggots Found in a Dog's Wound, Agriculture Department Urges Close Monitoring

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · States · GSM News

Arizona's Cochise County confirmed the state's first case of New World screwworm on October 29, in a dog. According to the Arizona Department of Agriculture, a local veterinarian examining the dog on the evening of October 26 found a large number of maggots consistent with New World screwworm characteristics in a wound on its back, and the case was subsequently confirmed. The New World screwworm is the larva of a fly that lays eggs in open wounds and body openings of warm-blooded animals; the larvae feed on living tissue and can seriously harm livestock and pets. The department said it remains prepared and vigilant and continues monitoring, urging all livestock owners, pet owners and animal industry partners to watch animals closely and immediately report any unusual wounds consistent with New World screwworm. New World screwworm had previously been confirmed in livestock and domestic animals in Texas and New Mexico, and on October 21 it was detected for the first time in wildlife, in a harvested elk in Pecos County, Texas; agricultural agencies are stepping up monitoring in related areas.
