Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii: Former University of Hawaii Head Coach June Jones Dies Oct. 29 at 73: Led Team to 12-0 Record in 2007, the School's First Undefeated Season

Former University of Hawaii and Southern Methodist University football head coach June Jones died on October 29 at age 73. His Run and Shoot Certification coaching program announced the news on social media that day, saying Jones's greatest legacy was not records and championships but the people he believed in, the opportunities he gave and the lives he changed. As a player, Jones played quarterback for Oregon, Hawaii and Portland State, where he learned the pass-centered run-and-shoot offense; he then served for years as an assistant coach at the professional level before taking over at Hawaii in 1999, his first college head coaching job. Before his arrival, Hawaii had just gone through a 0-12 season; in his first season he led the team to 9-4, the biggest single-season turnaround in college football history. His teams then ranked among the nation's top passing offenses every year, and quarterback Timmy Chang became the NCAA's all-time passing yardage leader. The peak of Jones's coaching career came in the 2007 season: led by Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan, Hawaii went 12-0 for the school's first undefeated regular season and reached a BCS bowl, the Sugar Bowl, for the first time, ultimately losing to Georgia 41-10. In nine seasons at Hawaii, he reached six bowl games, posted multiple double-digit-win seasons, and produced five All-Americans, 52 all-conference performers and 16 NFL draft picks. The University of Hawaii mourned him on social media as 'a leader, coach, mentor and innovator who helped bring Hawaii Football to unprecedented heights.'
