The U.S. Navy's Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine USS Columbia arrived on October 29 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Seavey Island in Kittery, Maine, to begin scheduled maintenance under the Navy's Service Life Extension Program. Shipyard Commander Capt. Jesse Nice said in a statement that day that, as Columbia enters the Service Life Extension Program, its sailors and the shipyard's skilled craftspeople stand ready to return it to the fleet, surpassing previous achievements on USS Cheyenne and USS Hampton. Capt. Mike Poplawski, commodore of Submarine Squadron Two, said Columbia is a front-line attack submarine with a proud history of service, and that he is confident the crew and shipyard professionals working together will, over the coming months of overhaul work, provide the nation with a formidable warship at the exact point of need. USS Columbia is commanded by Cmdr. William Murphy, and the town of Kittery will serve as the host community for its crew. Columbia's arrival follows the October 27 undocking of the Virginia-class nuclear submarine USS Washington at the same shipyard, which is undergoing a maintenance period.
