Maryland's Board of Public Works on October 29 approved $21 million in fiscal year 2027 Rural Legacy grants for projects in 19 Rural Legacy Areas across the state. The funding, made up of current appropriations and unspent funds from prior years, will be used to purchase conservation easements to permanently protect more than 4,240 acres of working farms and forests, shorelines, wetlands, wildlife habitat and cultural resources. The board also expanded the geographic boundaries of three existing Rural Legacy Areas: the Upper Patapsco area in Carroll County, the Manor area in Baltimore County and the Carrollton Manor area in Frederick County. In addition, the board approved more than $4.6 million in grants, provided by the Department of Natural Resources to local governments and land trusts for park amenities and land conservation in nine counties, of which about $4 million is Program Open Space local funding benefiting 14 projects. Old National Pike Park in Frederick County will use its grant to add picnic shelters, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, playground equipment, hiker-biker trails, landscaping, roads and parking. The board the same day also approved the Department of Natural Resources acquiring 2,188 acres in Somerset County for $4.12 million, to be managed by the Maryland Forest Service as part of the Chesapeake Forest Lands. Individual grant disbursements will be presented to the board for approval at a later date.
