Virginia: Spanberger Announces 2026 School Performance and Support Framework Results

Friday, October 30, 2026 · States · GSM News

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger announced the 2026 results of the state's School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF), covering more than 1,800 elementary, middle and high schools for the 2025-26 school year, released two months earlier than last year.

More than 99 percent of schools are now fully accredited, schools' overall framework scores rose about five points on average, and 38 percent of schools, four in ten, improved their overall performance category. The four categories are Distinguished, Meets Expectations, Approaching Expectations, and Needs Intensive Support.

Three of every four schools saw drops in chronic absenteeism. Of 49 eligible Title I schools, 16 exited Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) status, the highest proportion ever.

The framework measures academic performance and growth, readiness and attendance, and, for high schools, preparation for postsecondary education, employment or enlistment. The administration is implementing the December 2025 recommendations of the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) through Executive Order 4, House Bill 643 and Department of Education actions; a new student-growth methodology rewards schools for significant growth regardless of starting point.

The Department of Education is opening a $26.7 million School Improvement Grant funding opportunity, using federal school improvement funds, and launching a new state-funded pilot improvement network for schools identified for targeted support.

Spanberger, Secretary of Education Dr. Jeffery Smith and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jenna Conway said releasing the results two months early gives schools and families the data sooner so improvement work can start sooner.
