Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Over $1.7 Million in Job Training Grants to Houston and Rio Grande Valley Areas

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on October 29 that the state is awarding a total of $1,726,092 in Skills Development Fund grants through the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to train 689 workers in the Houston area and the Rio Grande Valley.
The largest of the four grants, $782,998, goes to Tesla Inc. to train 261 workers. A second grant of $690,044 goes to Texas Tissue LLC and Karsten Management LLC for 300 workers, and Watchfire Signs LLC receives $83,963 to train 41 workers.
The fourth grant, $169,087, was presented in McAllen at the Rio Bank–McColl Center to Workforce Solutions Lower Rio Grande Valley and its partners, covering training for 87 workers at Denso Ten America, Alps Logistics (USA), Index Fresh and Emerson Electric.
The training is delivered with Houston City College and regional workforce partners. TWC Chairman Joe Esparza and Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III took part in the presentations.
Since 1996, the Skills Development Fund has served more than 5,000 employers and supported more than 446,000 jobs. Abbott said employer-driven training of this kind is a key tool for keeping Texas competitive on jobs.
