In Sterling, Virginia, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on October 30 that its officers apprehended a 16-year-old boy at Washington Dulles International Airport on October 23, before he could flee to Ethiopia and avoid being charged in a Gastonia, North Carolina, murder.

According to local media reports in North Carolina, two teenagers in total were arrested and charged with murder in the killing of the 68-year-old Gastonia woman; the second teenager was arrested in South Carolina. CBP did not release the boy's name.

CBP said its officers screen arriving and departing international travelers at ports of entry across the country and work with law enforcement partners to capture wanted fugitives. Criminal charges are merely allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
