Massachusetts City of New Bedford Uses License Plate Readers to Track Stolen Vehicles and Generate Alerts; Civil Liberties Groups Demand Oversight

The southeastern Massachusetts fishing port of New Bedford, in Bristol County, is using automated license plate readers to track stolen vehicles and generate alerts, with plate data retained under rules that limit broad access, officials say. Supporters point out that Massachusetts law authorizes law enforcement to use the technology with limits on data retention.
Civil liberties advocates counter that the Fourth Amendment and privacy interests require meaningful oversight, clear retention policies and accountability for misuse, arguing that mass scanning collects data on everyone, not only suspects, and that data sharing with immigration or out-of-state law enforcement demands special care. The debate echoes national disputes as more cities deploy plate-reader networks; some states have adopted audit and retention rules, and New Bedford officials say they will report retention and error data to reduce public concern.
