University of Utah Apologizes on Oct. 29 over Game-Day Video Involving ESPN's Pat McAfee, Taking Full Responsibility for Producing and Posting It

Thursday, October 29, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

The University of Utah in Salt Lake City publicly apologized on October 29 over a video involving ESPN commentator Pat McAfee that aired during last weekend's college football game-day programming. The university said the video was intended to create lighthearted interaction around McAfee's return to campus but 'did not land as intended,' and that university staff review and post official social-media content, for which the school takes full responsibility.

Officials said they contacted McAfee to express thanks and regret and to apologize sincerely, adding that any impression he was made to feel 'unsafe or unwelcome' is the complete opposite of the truth. McAfee has been a full-time analyst on College GameDay since 2022, and last weekend the show came to Salt Lake City for Utah's game against the University of Houston.
