Seattle Completes Route 40 Corridor Upgrades: 3 Miles of Bus-Priority Lanes Serve Ballard to Westlake

Friday, October 30, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

Seattle's Route 40 bus corridor upgrade was completed on October 29, with city and county officials celebrating the milestone; the news was released on October 30. The Transit-Plus Multimodal Corridor project adds 3 miles of bus-priority lanes and upgrades about 6,000 feet of sidewalks, serving Ballard, Fremont and Westlake.

Funded by the voter-approved Seattle Transit Measure, the project was delivered by the Seattle Department of Transportation with King County Metro to cut bus delays, improve on-time performance and make walking safer. In January 2026, King County Metro had already deployed a zero-emission bus fleet on the route; the October 29 completion brings the corridor's hardware upgrades fully into place.
