Man Who Drowned in Quincy, Massachusetts, on August 20 Identified on October 30: Glenn Powers, 64, of Boston

Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey announced on October 30 that skeletal remains of an unidentified male homicide victim found in Quincy, Massachusetts, 35 years ago have been identified as Glenn Powers, a 1970 graduate of Randolph High School. The medical examiner determined Powers died of blunt force trauma and ruled the death a homicide.

The identification was made through forensic genetic genealogy, which combines advanced DNA sequencing with traditional genealogy research using publicly available databases and public records. Powers' body was discovered on March 21, 1991, by a hiker in a wooded area near 270 Quarry Street in Quincy, buried face down in a grave about three feet deep, with a circular hole about four inches in diameter at the crown of his skull. The then-state medical examiner said at the time the body had been in the grave for at least six months.

The case has been assigned to a Massachusetts State Police trooper with the unresolved cases unit, assisted by Quincy Police Detective Jim Menz. The district attorney's office says it does not call unsolved cases "cold cases" and continues to pursue them. Anyone with information may call the State Police tip line at the Norfolk District Attorney's Office at 781-830-4990, Quincy Police at 617-745-5768, or the State Police Unresolved Case Unit at 1-855-627-6583. The investigation is ongoing and no information about a perpetrator has been released.
