Four More Charged in Michigan University Threats Case on October 30: Prosecutors Say the Defendants Plotted a Terror Attack Targeting Pro-Palestinian Targets

In Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, a federal grand jury unsealed a superseding indictment on October 30 charging four additional defendants in the University of Michigan threats and vandalism case, bringing the total to 12. The new defendants are Henry David MacKeen-Shapiro, 23; Aaron Hunter Vonbargen, 25; Joseph Mark Fisher, 23; and Srishti Tarana Sharma, 23.
Federal agents arrested MacKeen-Shapiro and Vonbargen this week, and both were expected to be arraigned in federal court in Detroit on October 30; Fisher and Sharma remain at large. The original case, filed in June, charged eight people over what prosecutors describe as a monthslong campaign of vandalism and intimidation by a pro-Palestinian protest group targeting University of Michigan leaders, law enforcement, and a Jewish organization after the war in Gaza began, including broken windows and spray-painted pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel, and antisemitic messages.
U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon and FBI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyan both issued statements. MacKeen-Shapiro was among seven protesters charged in state court in 2024 over an encampment on the university's main campus; Attorney General Dana Nessel later dropped those charges. None of the four new defendants has commented, and no attorneys are yet listed for them in the court file.
