Warehouse Parking Lot Project Draws Pushback in Morristown, New Jersey, on October 30: Residents Say They Were Not Consulted, Hearing Set for November 12

In Roxbury Township, Morris County, New Jersey, U.S. Department of Justice officials have acknowledged that Immigration and Customs Enforcement processed detainees on two occasions in the parking lot of a Roxbury warehouse, though the detainees did not go inside the building.

Township Attorney Anthony Bucco relayed the admission, saying the state Attorney General's office investigation found no credible evidence that detainees were processed inside the warehouse. The warehouse, about 470,000 square feet along Route 46, was confirmed as a federal purchase in February. After rumors of the ICE plan surfaced late last year, the Roxbury council passed a resolution opposing its use to detain immigrants, and in March the town joined the state's lawsuit seeking to halt the conversion until Homeland Security completed an environmental assessment.

The Attorney General's office said on October 30 that the court order secured by Governor Sherrill and Attorney General Davenport still blocks ICE from converting the warehouse into a detention center unless and until DHS conducts an environmental assessment, and that the federal government has now agreed not to use the parking lot to process people apprehended during immigration enforcement actions. State and local officials say they will keep monitoring the property.
