Tennessee Governor Names Deputy Commissioner Dwight Hansen Interim Corrections Chief: Strickland Moves to Senior Adviser on November 3

Friday, October 30, 2026 · States · GSM News

In Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, Governor Bill Lee on October 30 appointed Christopher Hansen as interim commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, effective immediately, while he continues in his current role. Hansen has served as assistant commissioner of community supervision since joining the department in 2023, overseeing roughly 1,100 probation and parole staff statewide.

The appointment comes nearly a month after former Commissioner Frank Strada announced his resignation on October 3. Strada's departure followed two failed execution attempts this year: the May execution of Tony Carruthers was called off after the execution team could not set the needed IV lines, and the September 30 execution of Christa Pike did not result in death after two rounds of injections; Pike was taken to a hospital.

The governor has ordered a third-party independent investigation into the lethal injection protocol, led by former U.S. Attorney Ed Stanton, and paused all remaining executions this year. On October 30, Pike issued her first statement through her lawyer since the failed execution, saying she is in constant pain and held largely in isolation. The state said the interim appointment is meant to keep the department running during the investigation.
