Congressman McGuire and Challenger Perriello Campaign Head to Head in Virginia, Clashing Over Cost of Living and Health Care

In Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia, Republican incumbent Representative John McGuire and his Democratic challenger Tom Perriello both appeared at the Albemarle County Office Building on October 30, making their final appeals ahead of Election Day.
Both candidates addressed the cost of living and health care, with sharply different explanations and remedies. McGuire, completing his first term in Congress, blamed rising premiums on the Affordable Care Act, which Perriello supported when he was in Congress. Perriello pointed to President Trump's budget bill, which cut Medicaid and other federal funding and made it particularly hard for rural health clinics to stay open.
Perriello arrived in the morning just before the county offices opened at 8:30 a.m. for in-person early voting, and went inside at about 8:45 a.m. to cast his ballot for himself, Senator Mark Warner, and in favor of all three Virginia constitutional amendments. As of Friday morning, 20,000 in-person early ballots had been cast in Albemarle County, with another 6,000 absentee and mail ballots received. Virginia voters will decide the congressional seat on November 3.
