Vermont Governor's Race Called the Closest in a Decade: Incumbent Phil Scott Seeks a Sixth Two-Year Term

Friday, October 30, 2026 · States · GSM News

In Montpelier, Washington County, Vermont, the governor's race entered its final stretch on October 30 with polls showing an extremely close contest that could be the most competitive in a decade. Incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott is seeking a sixth two-year term against Democrat Amanda Janoo, an economist with the Wellbeing Economy Alliance who has never held public office.

Over the past month, one poll showed Janoo leading, another showed Scott ahead, and the most recent has them within the margin of error. Middlebury College political scientist Bert Johnson said it may be the most competitive gubernatorial race in the past ten years. Three minor-party candidates are also running.

Vermont voters will cast ballots on November 3; the governor serves a two-year term. With the race this tight, final-days campaigning and turnout efforts could prove decisive.
